This is Substraight's Quick Colonizer mixture for those antsy mycologists who want to cut down on the time their mycelium needs to stay couped up in those jars. ;)
This mixture is designed to provide the benefit of additional nutrients, however they will greatly benefit from a well thought out design for super fast colonization. If you listen to the mushroom properly, it will tell you what it wants. If you go down to a microscopic level, and look at what happens when you prepare a BRF/Verm jar, you will essentially see pieces of medium coarse vermiculite coated with brown rice flour. These larger pieces of vermiculite don't always sit on eachother evenly, leaving small gaps that on a microscopic level take some effort on the part of the mycelium to "jump" those gaps. If only they had some sort of bridge...
The idea of the Quick Colonizer mixture, is to provide the mycelium with a means of traveling from one food source to another much faster and more efficiently, in a fashion that also adds nutrients. We use the addition of coconut coir and fresh brewed coffee (not grounds) for a couple reasons.
1. The coconut coir is very fibrous, and those fibers will sit between the gaps in the brown rice flour covered vermiculite providing a sort of "rope bridge" to allow the mycelium to cross those gaps with ease, and much faster.
2. We use the coffee as an added source of nitrogen for the mycelium to feed on also encouraging faster colonization.
On average, we have seen colonization times sped up by over 7 days, basically saving you the extra week that the mycelium is supposed to sit in the jars to consolidate its hold on the substrate. Manipulating temperature according to particular species' requirements may yield even FASTER colonization times.
Our jars will be available with either 2, 3, or 4 3/32" innoculation holes pre-punched based upon your request. (The standard will be 4 holes if you don't specify.) We may offer jars with NO innoculation holes in the future, however we want to be able to stand behind our No Contamination Guarantee and cannot guarantee sterility of the jars once they are opened to the elements.
